Abstract

Open pedagogy is more than adopting an OER for your course. Open pedagogy includes inviting students to be part of the teaching process. Motivation for adopting an OER as part of this approach varies among faculty. Our aim at St. Norbert College is to engage students in the learning process by providing them with opportunities for knowledge construction. Two biology faculty members will present their unique open pedagogy "story" including some preliminary insights about the impact of OER adoption/use on student learning and engagement. Following this, there will be an interactive discussion of how ownership changes the learning process.

Description

The goals of this presentation are to share initial experiences with adopting/incorporating OER into biology courses, reflecting on the pedagogical motivation, the process, and the impact on student engagement and learning. Our stories will serve as a framework for the discussion of three key threads related to adopting an OER and practicing open pedagogy: 1) access, 2) content, and 3) outcomes. Access will include consideration of the advantages of OER as well as potential barriers for students. Given that OERs are free and available in a variety of formats, students are able to engage with the content before, during, and after a course; however, these and other advantages may not be utilized if students are only familiar with traditional textbooks. Choice of content includes making decisions about the type of resources to provide (e.g. quizzes, videos, collaborative readings). We will discuss integration of student generated content into the course framework and how ownership changes the learning process. The third piece is measuring student learning outcomes to determine the impact of OER-enabled pedagogies. We will present data from our courses and introduce methods for assessing OER effectiveness. This interactive presentation will include an opportunity for participants to develop their own approach to adopting, adapting, or creating an OER for a particular course.

Outline of session activities:

  1. Icebreaker activity to generate thoughts about student centered learning
  2. Briefly share two OER stories
  3. Pair and share knowledge about: access, content, outcomes as related to OER
  4. Discuss examples of access, content, and outcomes directly related to OER stories
  5. Pair and share to identify key aspects one could implement for an open pedagogy approach to a course they teach
