Abstract

The University of Texas at Austin’s Ethics Integration Initiative, supported by the Teagle Foundation, is innovating ethics education across classroom formats in the liberal arts. The Initiative has reached 5,000 students in the College of Liberal Arts as well as thousands more in education, fine arts, communications, and natural sciences. Drawing upon research, curricular development, and assessment surveys, this presentation will offer an interactive discussion for faculty and staff seeking to develop or advance ethics education in their undergraduate liberal arts programs.

The session will introduce key concepts of practical and behavioral ethics and discuss how teaching ethics can have a positive impact in liberal arts education. It will also highlight new research-based resources that can be used to teach behavioral ethics, including Ethics Unwrapped, an award-winning video series freely available online and used at more than 500 colleges and universities around the world. Produced by UT Austin, Ethics Unwrapped offers videos and teaching resources to support ethics education in traditional, online, and blended classrooms.

The session will also share methods of integrating and assessing curricular resources as well as the assessment results from students and faculty over the last two years. The Initiative worked with seven faculty across 11 courses in three departments in Liberal Arts to tailor ethics curricula to fit the goals and topics of a variety of classes, including a 1,000 student online course and a traditional class with online components. The session will conclude with a discussion of how these tools and materials can be used for similar results in other undergraduate liberal arts programs.
