Abstract

Student success initiatives such as blended learning and active learning have been buzzwords on campuses for quite some time now. The question is what do all those buzzwords really mean and what do they look like at small liberal arts colleges. Many of the definitions are broad and can be uniquely applied depending on your institution's size and culture. How do you get faculty on board with such new initiatives without creating fear around teaching with technology under a blended learning or active learning framework? In this presentation hear about lessons learned from creating a blended learning exploration series for faculty development at a small liberal arts college.

In an effort to tie together many of our IT lead student success initiatives such as active learning and Teaching with iPads, the blended learning exploration series touched on several different ways to approach blended learning at Swarthmore College. The workshop series goals were to help faculty:

  • · Identify what blended learning is and how it’s relevant to the Swarthmore College’s campus
  • · Discuss challenges with blended learning and common misconceptions
  • · Learn about resources for blended learning support and hear from campus faculty and staff who are involved in blended learning initiatives
  • · Develop actionable ways to implement in class or activities/modifications to courses

Throughout this presentation I will walk you through the challenges and successes I experienced during our first blended learning workshop series at a small liberal arts institution. I aim to illustrate how to come up with creative solutions for your institution as well and discuss areas of opportunities.
