Description

At Princeton University, language instructors are always looking for new ways to enhance and engage their students, both in and out of the classroom. The McGraw Center for Teaching and Learning’s Educational and Classroom Technologies group works closely with instructors to develop customized tools to increase access to quality course materials to support and engage teaching and learning. This presentation will touch upon the pedagogical approaches of the language courses, learning outcomes, and demonstrate how the interactive course tools and materials are used in creative ways to extended the class experience outside of the classroom.

In these courses, instructors complement class interactions outside of the classroom through a series of interactive tools, such as: video, animation, audio, quizzing, flip cards, and word-hovering vocabulary tool. Through the use of these online interactive tools, students now have the flexibility and access to courses materials and supplemental materials outside of classroom. This allows instructors can focus on one-on-one instruction and collaborative learning activities during class time. It also allows instructors to quickly assess students levels of progression.

With time constraints, instructors can only provide so much material during class. An interactive course design must be deliberate, intentional and purposeful. The benefits of using these tools outside of the classroom allows students to study at their own pace, confirm their understanding through a series of assessments and track their progress.

If time permits, I will discuss how these tools can easily be implemented at your respective institutions.
