Abstract

This conference paper will outline my efforts to bring the intellectual work and extensive correspondence of self-educated philosopher, correspondent and English noblewoman Lady Victoria Welby (1837–1912) into the digital environment. Through the digitization and mapping of her extensive correspondence with some of the leading philosophers, semioticians, and personalities of Victorian England, I hope to demonstrate fresh patterns of understanding that will not only highlight Welby's role in the circulation of ideas and theories, but also lesser-explored aspects of her intellectual life. My objective with this pilot project is to generate an online resource that can be used by other scholars while providing rich, contextual metadata that will document the physical aspects of the documentary record and the provenance of the remnants of Welby's archives that remain and are housed at the Clara Thomas Archives & Special Collections.
