Liberal Art Approach.....An Innovation in Higher Education (Apeejay Stya University-A Case Study)
Abstract
Apeejay Stya University (ASU) is a milestone in the pursuit of social commitment and excellence reflecting the best practices of the leading universities of the world. It has reached the shores of developing into a seat of global learning to bring about transformation of the society through value-based education, man making, and nation building. The University has come to be known for its innovation in Higher Education, Liberal Arts, and research aimed at nurturing environment that cherishes independent thinking, creativity, risk taking and out of the box thinking. The academic system of ASU represents a unique vision. It encompasses the three interdisciplinary pillars: Technology, Research and Liberal Arts, at the same time allowing scholars to fully explore their potential. It represents that individuals should take ownership and responsibility for their learning. With this approach university is committed to innovation, industry centered approach, academic freedom and nation building. Objective of liberal art approach is the holistic development of each student through inter-disciplinary, multi-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary approaches to teaching and research methodology. The system is designed with the standard international curriculum which includes lectures, tutorials, lab work, industrial training, preparatory work and assignments. To take a degree, credits need to be earned and they are divided unevenly into four segments required for graduation:
